Our Approach
Wellspring's treatment plan is a multifaceted approach. Clients receive daily counseling and workshops from professionals, most of whom have themselves been involved in exploitative groups or relationships. Counselors help clients reconstruct their experience and then place that experience within the framework of the coercive persuasion model articulated in the early 1960's by Dr. Robert J. Lifton in his work Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism. The workshops supplement the counseling sessions, further examining the dynamics of coercive manipulation.Clients undergo a battery of tests including the MCMI-III, MCSDS Personal Reaction Inventory, BDI, STAI-Y, DES, IES, CSVO, PCMS, PCVS, GPA Scale,TPC, Adult Child Distortion Scale, and NIS. These tests are administered before and after treatment, and results are available to clients.
The individualized care that clients receive is also an important component in treating coercive abuse victims. It builds a base of emotional safety and a sense of trust. To that end, residence coordinators are trained in empathic listening, crisis intervention, and also facilitate outings if they are desired. Further, clients also have access to our resource library, allowing active participation in treatmentThe beautiful setting of the Alpine-style chalet where clients are housed enhances treatment effectiveness. The warm decor and peaceful woods that surround the Lodge create a calming environment for clients who have often been suffering from high levels of anxiety.
